Chapter 9

I sat in stunned silence. Even though I’m not a best-selling author, I do sell a fair number of books and make a decent living at it. I suppose at some point every writer has a stalker. I’ve never had a fan show up at my door before and that was more than somewhat disconcerting, especially since he showed up at the hotel. I did wonder if he was the one who had broken into my apartment or had put the key over the door. How had he gotten a key? That was the scary part.

“I take it you know him.” Sam’s tone was flat. “Why didn’t you tell me you knew him, Harper?”

“I don’t, I didn’t,” I stuttered. “How, how did he find me?”

“Tell me, from the beginning.”

“Um, well, he started following me on social media. Then he started sending fan emails. I typically respond to people.” I started to twist my hands. “He then started saying he loved me and wanted to take me out on dates. I ignored those and didn’t respond.”

Taking a deep breath, I continued, “I also really don’t put anything really personal out on social media, so I didn’t think much about it.”

“What happened?”

“He started sending me photos of places where I had been, photos of me with friends, photos of me and my ex-husband…before he became my ex-husband. He’d say things like ‘I could be here with you’ or ‘We’d have so much fun together.’ Then he sent me pictures of my husband with another woman…” I paused, it was still very painful and even harder to verbalize, “in a compromising position.”

“Sheet Olympics,” murmured Sam.

I nodded. “I haven’t heard that term before but yes. Danny said he loved me and would never do to me what my husband was doing, that he would never cheat on me.”

“Did you report him?”

I just looked at Sam. The thought of ‘you’re a special kind of stupid’ bounced around in my brain. Instead, I said, “What do you think? Yes, but you and I both know virtually nothing is going to be done. It only shows a paper trail on the off chance that I’m murdered or something. Then everyone will lament about how the system has failed once again, how the system is broken, what a nice person I was, blah, blah, blah.”

Sam merely nodded his head in agreement. “Harper, how do you think he found you?”

Almost breaking down in tears, I hate all these emotions that keep springing up, I semi-wailed, “No clue. That’s your job. You find out how he’s done this. I’ll file harassment charges against him. Send him back to wherever he lives. Make him leave me alone.”

Sam looked a little awkward, which was kind of surprising considering all the strange people he encounters. Maybe he doesn’t run into emotional females very often. I don’t run into this side of me…ever.

“Is this the reason why you moved back to Palm Park? Danny Willis caused you to get a divorce from your
